- CSV in, Tally XML out
01 / Why convert
Banks export statements as CSV, and TallyPrime needs vouchers. This makes a Payment or Receipt voucher from each row, with your bank ledger on one side.
02 / What carries over
From CSV to Tally XML, field by field.
What the CSV file can hold, and where it goes in the Tally XML file.
| In the CSV file | In the Tally XML file |
|---|---|
| Date | Kept |
| Amount (money in and out) | Kept |
| Payee or description | In the narration |
| Memo (extra text) | In the narration |
| Check or reference number | In the narration |
| Running balance | Tally XML has no place for it |
| Account number | Not in a CSV file |
| Currency | Tally XML has no place for it |
| Category | The other ledger you type |
03 / Importing it
Importing the Tally XML file.
TallyPrime
- Open the company. New company? First import the ledger setup file: Alt+O (Import), then Masters.
- Then Alt+O (Import), then Transactions, and pick the vouchers file.
- Import each file once: Tally does not skip vouchers it already has.
Tally.ERP 9
- Gateway of Tally, then Import of Data, then Vouchers (Masters for the ledger file).
04 / The CSV file
Getting a CSV file.
Plain text, one transaction per line, values separated by commas (or semicolons, tabs or pipes). Every bank uses its own columns.
- Online banking: Transactions, then Download or Export, then CSV (sometimes called “comma separated” or “spreadsheet”).
- Card and money apps (Amex, Monzo, Revolut, Starling and the like) export CSV from their statements screen.
Have a bank statement PDF instead? The bank statement converter reads it in your browser too.
05 / Good to know
The details that matter.
- Columns are matched by their headings, or by what is in them when there are none. They are shown before you download, and a wrong guess is one click to change.
- When the file has a balance column, every row is checked against it, and an “Opening balance” row becomes the opening balance.
- If money out is written as positive amounts (American Express does this), tick the swap box.
- Dates like 03/04/2026 can mean March or April. The order is worked out from the file (a day over 12 decides it), and you can switch it when nothing does.
- Tally refuses the whole file if a ledger in it doesn’t exist, so type both ledger names exactly as they are in your company. The ledger setup file creates them in a new company.
06 / Questions
Straight answers.
Is this CSV to Tally converter free?
Yes, for 2 files a day with no account. A free account (just your email, no password) gives you 2 more, and paid plans have no daily limit. It runs in your browser, and nothing is stored.
Is my CSV file uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and the Tally file is written by code running in this browser tab. Neither is sent to a server. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab, and convert a file.
Will importing twice create duplicates in Tally?
Yes: Tally XML has no duplicate check, so import each file once. If you need to redo it, delete the imported vouchers first.
My CSV file has different column names. Will it work?
Yes. Columns are matched by their headings in English and several other languages, or by their contents when there are no headings. You see the match before downloading and can change any column. Single amount columns, separate money in/out columns, and Dr/Cr markers all work.
