Tally needs both ledger names exactly as they are in your company.
New company? Download the ledger setup file too and import it first (Import, then Masters).QuickBooks Desktop needs both account names exactly as they are in your chart of accounts.
QuickBooks makes any account it doesn’t know into a new bank account, so check the spelling.- Runs in your browser

- QIF in, QBO out
01 / Why convert
QuickBooks doesn’t import QIF. This turns a QIF register into a .qbo Web Connect file that QuickBooks Online and Desktop accept.
02 / What carries over
From QIF to QBO, field by field.
What the QIF file can hold, and where it goes in the QBO file.
| In the QIF file | In the QBO file |
|---|---|
| Date | Kept |
| Amount (money in and out) | Kept |
| Payee or description | Payee (32 characters), full text in the memo |
| Memo (extra text) | Kept |
| Check or reference number | Kept |
| Bank’s transaction ID (FITID) | Not in a QIF file |
| Running balance | Not in a QIF file |
| Account number | Not in a QIF file |
| Category | QBO has no place for it |
| Credit card (not a bank account) | Kept |
03 / Importing it
Importing the QBO file.
QuickBooks Online
- Bank transactions (All apps, then Accounting), then the Link account menu, then Upload from file.
- Pick the .qbo file, then the QuickBooks account it belongs to.
- Each upload takes up to 1,000 transactions and 350 KB; the converter tells you when a file is bigger.
QuickBooks Desktop
- File, then Utilities, then Import, then Web Connect Files.
- Choose an existing account (or let QuickBooks create one), then review the transactions in Bank Feeds.
04 / The QIF file
Getting a QIF file.
Quicken Interchange Format, an older plain-text format. Quicken, GnuCash, Microsoft Money, Banktivity and MoneyWiz read it. It has no account numbers or transaction IDs.
- Quicken: File, then Export, then QIF File.
- GnuCash and Microsoft Money export QIF, and some banks still offer it as a download.
Have a bank statement PDF instead? The bank statement converter reads it in your browser too.
05 / Good to know
The details that matter.
- Quicken’s “Opening Balance” record becomes the opening balance, not a transaction. Investment registers and category lists are skipped, and a file with several accounts lets you pick one.
- Dates like 03/04/2026 can mean March or April. The order is worked out from the file (a day over 12 decides it), and you can switch it when nothing does.
- Converting the same file again gives the same transaction IDs, so QuickBooks and Quicken skip what they already have.
- QuickBooks Desktop may label the account “Wells Fargo”. Web Connect files need a bank id from Intuit’s list, and this is the one most converters use; the transactions are yours.
- QuickBooks Online takes up to 1,000 transactions and 350 KB per upload. The converter tells you when a file is bigger, so you can upload it in parts.
- Payee names are cut to 32 characters, the OFX limit QuickBooks enforces; the full text goes in the memo. Text is written as plain ASCII, which older importers need.
06 / Questions
Straight answers.
Is this QIF to QBO converter free?
Yes, for 2 files a day with no account. A free account (just your email, no password) gives you 2 more, and paid plans have no daily limit. It runs in your browser, and nothing is stored.
Is my QIF file uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and the QBO file is written by code running in this browser tab. Neither is sent to a server. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab, and convert a file.
Will QuickBooks import the same transactions twice?
No, as long as you import the same transactions: every transaction has an ID (FITID), and QuickBooks skips IDs it already has. Converting the same file again gives the same IDs.
How are dates read?
QIF files write dates in the order of the program that made them (MM/DD in the US, DD/MM in most other places). The order is worked out from the dates themselves, and you can switch it in the panel when nothing in the file decides it.
Does it work for credit cards?
Yes. A card account in the QIF file stays a card account. You can also set the account type to Credit card in the panel, and the QBO file is written as a card statement.
