No file to hand?

  • Runs in your browser
  • 2 free a day, no sign-up
  • OFX in, QIF out

01 / Why convert

For money apps that read QIF, or to move transactions between personal-finance programs.

02 / What carries over

From OFX to QIF, field by field.

What the OFX file can hold, and where it goes in the QIF file.

03 / Importing it

Importing the QIF file.

Quicken for Windows

  1. File, then File Import, then QIF File, and pick the account. Current versions take QIF into any account; versions from 2005 to 2017 only into cash, asset and liability accounts (use the .qfx file there).

Quicken for Mac

  1. File, then Import, then Bank or Brokerage File.

GnuCash, Microsoft Money, Banktivity, MoneyWiz

  1. File, then Import, then QIF.

04 / The OFX file

Getting an OFX file.

Open Financial Exchange, the open bank-download format behind QBO and QFX. Xero, Sage, MYOB, GnuCash, Moneydance and most accounting apps read it.

  • Online banking: Transactions, then Download, then OFX (or “Microsoft Money”). Common at banks outside the US.

Have a bank statement PDF instead? The bank statement converter reads it in your browser too.

05 / Good to know

The details that matter.

  • A OFX file with several accounts (checking and savings in one download, say) lets you choose the account.
  • OFX 1.x and 2.x are both read, along with the bank’s corrections to earlier transactions.
  • Choose MM/DD/YYYY or DD/MM/YYYY to match your app’s region: QIF has no date standard. Credit cards are written as a card register.

06 / Questions

Straight answers.

Is this OFX to QIF converter free?

Yes, for 2 files a day with no account. A free account (just your email, no password) gives you 2 more, and paid plans have no daily limit. It runs in your browser, and nothing is stored.

Is my OFX file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and the QIF file is written by code running in this browser tab. Neither is sent to a server. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab, and convert a file.

My OFX file has several accounts. Which one is converted?

The first, until you choose another: when a file holds more than one account (checking and savings, say), the panel lists them all.

Does it work for credit cards?

Yes. A card account in the OFX file stays a card account. You can also set the account type to Credit card in the panel, and the QIF file is written as a card statement.

07 / More converters

Other files, same idea.
