01 / Why convert
Tally’s XML export is for machines. This lists one ledger’s vouchers, usually the bank’s, in a spreadsheet: date, party, narration, ledger and amount.
02 / What carries over
From Tally XML to Excel, field by field.
What the Tally XML file can hold, and where it goes in the Excel file.
| In the Tally XML file | In the Excel file |
|---|---|
| Date | Kept |
| Amount (money in and out) | Kept |
| Payee or description | Kept |
| Memo (extra text) | Kept |
| Check or reference number | Reference column |
| Running balance | Not in a Tally XML file |
| Category | Kept |
03 / Opening it
Opening the Excel file.
Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets
- Open the .xlsx file. Dates are real dates and amounts real numbers, so sorting, filters and SUM work straight away.
- In Google Sheets: File, then Import, then Upload.
04 / The Tally XML file
Getting a Tally XML file.
TallyPrime’s and Tally.ERP 9’s exchange format. Each voucher has ledger lines that balance: a debit is written as a negative amount.
- TallyPrime: open the Day Book (or the bank ledger’s vouchers), press Alt+E (Export), set Format to XML (Data Interchange), then Export.
Have a bank statement PDF instead? The bank statement converter reads it in your browser too.
05 / Good to know
The details that matter.
- Export from TallyPrime as XML (Data Interchange). You pick the ledger: bank ledgers come first. Cancelled and optional vouchers are left out, and Tally’s UTF-16 files are read as they are.
- Two sheets: the transactions (real dates and numbers, oldest first) and a summary with the dates, totals and, when the file had them, the opening and closing balances.
06 / Questions
Straight answers.
Is this Tally XML to Excel converter free?
Yes, for 2 files a day with no account. A free account (just your email, no password) gives you 2 more, and paid plans have no daily limit. It runs in your browser, and nothing is stored.
Is my Tally XML file uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and the Excel file is written by code running in this browser tab. Neither is sent to a server. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab, and convert a file.
Which columns will the Excel file have?
Date, Description, then Memo, Reference and Category when the Tally XML file has them, then Debit (money out) and Credit (money in), and Balance when the file had a running balance. Dates are real dates, oldest first.
Which ledger becomes the account?
The bank ledger: ledgers with bank details come first, then any ledger on the bank or cash side of payments and receipts. You can pick another in the panel.
