No file to hand?

  • Runs in your browser

  • QFX in, QBO out

01 / Why convert

QuickBooks won’t take a file a bank made for Quicken. This rewrites it as a .qbo with the Intuit bank id QuickBooks checks for, and keeps every transaction ID.

02 / What carries over

From QFX to QBO, field by field.

What the QFX file can hold, and where it goes in the QBO file.

03 / Importing it

Importing the QBO file.

QuickBooks Online

  1. Bank transactions (All apps, then Accounting), then the Link account menu, then Upload from file.
  2. Pick the .qbo file, then the QuickBooks account it belongs to.
  3. Each upload takes up to 1,000 transactions and 350 KB; the converter tells you when a file is bigger.

QuickBooks Desktop

  1. File, then Utilities, then Import, then Web Connect Files.
  2. Choose an existing account (or let QuickBooks create one), then review the transactions in Bank Feeds.

04 / The QFX file

Getting a Quicken Web Connect file (.qfx).

The same thing as a .qbo, made for Quicken: OFX with Intuit’s bank id. Quicken reads the bank’s transaction IDs to skip what it already has.

  • Online banking: Transactions, then Download, then “Quicken Web Connect (.qfx)”.

Have a bank statement PDF instead? The bank statement converter reads it in your browser too.

05 / Good to know

The details that matter.

  • A QFX file with several accounts (checking and savings in one download, say) lets you choose the account.
  • OFX 1.x and 2.x are both read, along with the bank’s corrections to earlier transactions.
  • The bank’s own transaction IDs are kept, so QuickBooks and Quicken still recognise transactions they downloaded before.
  • QuickBooks Desktop may label the account “Wells Fargo”. Web Connect files need a bank id from Intuit’s list, and this is the one most converters use; the transactions are yours.
  • QuickBooks Online takes up to 1,000 transactions and 350 KB per upload. The converter tells you when a file is bigger, so you can upload it in parts.
  • Payee names are cut to 32 characters, the OFX limit QuickBooks enforces; the full text goes in the memo. Text is written as plain ASCII, which older importers need.

06 / Questions

Straight answers.

Is this QFX to QBO converter free?

Yes, for 2 files a day with no account. A free account (just your email, no password) gives you 2 more, and paid plans have no daily limit. It runs in your browser, and nothing is stored.

Is my QFX file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and the QBO file is written by code running in this browser tab. Neither is sent to a server. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab, and convert a file.

Will QuickBooks import the same transactions twice?

No, as long as you import the same transactions: every transaction has an ID (FITID), and QuickBooks skips IDs it already has. The IDs from your bank’s file are kept.

My QFX file has several accounts. Which one is converted?

The first, until you choose another: when a file holds more than one account (checking and savings, say), the panel lists them all.

Does it work for credit cards?

Yes. A card account in the QFX file stays a card account. You can also set the account type to Credit card in the panel, and the QBO file is written as a card statement.
