No file to hand?

  • Runs in your browser
  • 2 free a day, no sign-up
  • OFX in, CSV out

01 / Why convert

A plain table of the transactions in an OFX file, for any spreadsheet or app that reads CSV.

02 / What carries over

From OFX to CSV, field by field.

What the OFX file can hold, and where it goes in the CSV file.

In the OFX fileIn the CSV file
DateKept
Amount (money in and out)Kept
Payee or descriptionKept
Memo (extra text)Kept

Bank’s transaction ID (FITID)CSV has no place for it
Running balanceNot in a OFX file
Account numberCSV has no place for it
CurrencyCSV has no place for it
Credit card (not a bank account)CSV has no place for it

03 / Opening it

Opening the CSV file.

Excel

  1. Data, then From Text/CSV, then pick the file. Dates are written 2026-01-05, which Excel reads the same in every country.

Google Sheets or Numbers

  1. File, then Import (Sheets) or Open (Numbers).

Accounting apps

  1. Most apps that take a bank CSV ask you to match columns once: Date, Description, Debit, Credit.

04 / The OFX file

Getting an OFX file.

Open Financial Exchange, the open bank-download format behind QBO and QFX. Xero, Sage, MYOB, GnuCash, Moneydance and most accounting apps read it.

  • Online banking: Transactions, then Download, then OFX (or “Microsoft Money”). Common at banks outside the US.

Have a bank statement PDF instead? The bank statement converter reads it in your browser too.

05 / Good to know

The details that matter.

  • A OFX file with several accounts (checking and savings in one download, say) lets you choose the account.
  • OFX 1.x and 2.x are both read, along with the bank’s corrections to earlier transactions.
  • Columns: Date, Description, then Memo, Reference and Category when the file has them, then Debit and Credit, and Balance when the file had one. UTF-8 with a byte-order mark, so Excel shows accents and ₹ signs correctly.

06 / Questions

Straight answers.

Is this OFX to CSV converter free?

Yes, for 2 files a day with no account. A free account (just your email, no password) gives you 2 more, and paid plans have no daily limit. It runs in your browser, and nothing is stored.

Is my OFX file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and the CSV file is written by code running in this browser tab. Neither is sent to a server. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab, and convert a file.

Which columns will the CSV file have?

Date, Description, then Memo, Reference and Category when the OFX file has them, then Debit (money out) and Credit (money in), and Balance when the file had a running balance. Dates are real dates, oldest first.

My OFX file has several accounts. Which one is converted?

The first, until you choose another: when a file holds more than one account (checking and savings, say), the panel lists them all.

07 / More converters

Other files, same idea.

All of them run in your browser. For PDFs, start at the bank statement converter; every converter is on the converters page.
