No file to hand?

  • Runs in your browser
  • 2 free a day, no sign-up
  • QIF in, CSV out

01 / Why convert

The transactions in a QIF file as a plain CSV table, categories included, for any spreadsheet or app.

02 / What carries over

From QIF to CSV, field by field.

What the QIF file can hold, and where it goes in the CSV file.

Amount (money in and out)Kept

Credit card (not a bank account)CSV has no place for it

03 / Opening it

Opening the CSV file.

Excel

  1. Data, then From Text/CSV, then pick the file. Dates are written 2026-01-05, which Excel reads the same in every country.

Google Sheets or Numbers

  1. File, then Import (Sheets) or Open (Numbers).

Accounting apps

  1. Most apps that take a bank CSV ask you to match columns once: Date, Description, Debit, Credit.

04 / The QIF file

Getting a QIF file.

Quicken Interchange Format, an older plain-text format. Quicken, GnuCash, Microsoft Money, Banktivity and MoneyWiz read it. It has no account numbers or transaction IDs.

  • Quicken: File, then Export, then QIF File.
  • GnuCash and Microsoft Money export QIF, and some banks still offer it as a download.

Have a bank statement PDF instead? The bank statement converter reads it in your browser too.

05 / Good to know

The details that matter.

  • Quicken’s “Opening Balance” record becomes the opening balance, not a transaction. Investment registers and category lists are skipped, and a file with several accounts lets you pick one.
  • Dates like 03/04/2026 can mean March or April. The order is worked out from the file (a day over 12 decides it), and you can switch it when nothing does.
  • Columns: Date, Description, then Memo, Reference and Category when the file has them, then Debit and Credit, and Balance when the file had one. UTF-8 with a byte-order mark, so Excel shows accents and ₹ signs correctly.

06 / Questions

Straight answers.

Is this QIF to CSV converter free?

Yes, for 2 files a day with no account. A free account (just your email, no password) gives you 2 more, and paid plans have no daily limit. It runs in your browser, and nothing is stored.

Is my QIF file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and the CSV file is written by code running in this browser tab. Neither is sent to a server. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab, and convert a file.

Which columns will the CSV file have?

Date, Description, then Memo, Reference and Category when the QIF file has them, then Debit (money out) and Credit (money in), and Balance when the file had a running balance. Dates are real dates, oldest first.

How are dates read?

QIF files write dates in the order of the program that made them (MM/DD in the US, DD/MM in most other places). The order is worked out from the dates themselves, and you can switch it in the panel when nothing in the file decides it.
