- OFX in, Tally XML out
01 / Why convert
An OFX download from your bank, as TallyPrime Payment and Receipt vouchers.
02 / What carries over
From OFX to Tally XML, field by field.
What the OFX file can hold, and where it goes in the Tally XML file.
| In the OFX file | In the Tally XML file |
|---|---|
| Date | Kept |
| Amount (money in and out) | Kept |
| Payee or description | In the narration |
| Memo (extra text) | In the narration |
| Check or reference number | In the narration |
| Bank’s transaction ID (FITID) | Tally XML has no place for it |
| Account number | The ledger name you type |
| Currency | Tally XML has no place for it |
| Credit card (not a bank account) | Tally XML has no place for it |
03 / Importing it
Importing the Tally XML file.
TallyPrime
- Open the company. New company? First import the ledger setup file: Alt+O (Import), then Masters.
- Then Alt+O (Import), then Transactions, and pick the vouchers file.
- Import each file once: Tally does not skip vouchers it already has.
Tally.ERP 9
- Gateway of Tally, then Import of Data, then Vouchers (Masters for the ledger file).
04 / The OFX file
Getting an OFX file.
Open Financial Exchange, the open bank-download format behind QBO and QFX. Xero, Sage, MYOB, GnuCash, Moneydance and most accounting apps read it.
- Online banking: Transactions, then Download, then OFX (or “Microsoft Money”). Common at banks outside the US.
Have a bank statement PDF instead? The bank statement converter reads it in your browser too.
05 / Good to know
The details that matter.
- A OFX file with several accounts (checking and savings in one download, say) lets you choose the account.
- OFX 1.x and 2.x are both read, along with the bank’s corrections to earlier transactions.
- Tally refuses the whole file if a ledger in it doesn’t exist, so type both ledger names exactly as they are in your company. The ledger setup file creates them in a new company.
06 / Questions
Straight answers.
Is this OFX to Tally converter free?
Yes, for 2 files a day with no account. A free account (just your email, no password) gives you 2 more, and paid plans have no daily limit. It runs in your browser, and nothing is stored.
Is my OFX file uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and the Tally file is written by code running in this browser tab. Neither is sent to a server. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab, and convert a file.
Will importing twice create duplicates in Tally?
Yes: Tally XML has no duplicate check, so import each file once. If you need to redo it, delete the imported vouchers first.
My OFX file has several accounts. Which one is converted?
The first, until you choose another: when a file holds more than one account (checking and savings, say), the panel lists them all.
07 / More converters
Other files, same idea.
All of them run in your browser. For PDFs, start at the bank statement converter; every converter is on the converters page.
