No file to hand?

  • Runs in your browser
  • 2 free a day, no sign-up
  • QBO in, QIF out

01 / Why convert

For apps that read QIF rather than Web Connect: Quicken for Mac, GnuCash, Microsoft Money, Banktivity and MoneyWiz.

02 / What carries over

From QBO to QIF, field by field.

What the QBO file can hold, and where it goes in the QIF file.

Amount (money in and out)Kept

03 / Importing it

Importing the QIF file.

Quicken for Windows

  1. File, then File Import, then QIF File, and pick the account. Current versions take QIF into any account; versions from 2005 to 2017 only into cash, asset and liability accounts (use the .qfx file there).

Quicken for Mac

  1. File, then Import, then Bank or Brokerage File.

GnuCash, Microsoft Money, Banktivity, MoneyWiz

  1. File, then Import, then QIF.

04 / The QBO file

Getting a QuickBooks Web Connect file (.qbo).

Intuit’s bank download for QuickBooks: an OFX file with Intuit’s bank id added. It carries each transaction’s date, amount, payee, memo, check number and the bank’s own transaction ID.

  • Online banking: Transactions, then Download, then “QuickBooks Web Connect (.qbo)”.

Have a bank statement PDF instead? The bank statement converter reads it in your browser too.

05 / Good to know

The details that matter.

  • A QBO file with several accounts (checking and savings in one download, say) lets you choose the account.
  • OFX 1.x and 2.x are both read, along with the bank’s corrections to earlier transactions.
  • Choose MM/DD/YYYY or DD/MM/YYYY to match your app’s region: QIF has no date standard. Credit cards are written as a card register.

06 / Questions

Straight answers.

Is this QBO to QIF converter free?

Yes, for 2 files a day with no account. A free account (just your email, no password) gives you 2 more, and paid plans have no daily limit. It runs in your browser, and nothing is stored.

Is my QBO file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and the QIF file is written by code running in this browser tab. Neither is sent to a server. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab, and convert a file.

My QBO file has several accounts. Which one is converted?

The first, until you choose another: when a file holds more than one account (checking and savings, say), the panel lists them all.

Does it work for credit cards?

Yes. A card account in the QBO file stays a card account. You can also set the account type to Credit card in the panel, and the QIF file is written as a card statement.
