- Tally XML in, QIF out
01 / Why convert
A Tally bank ledger’s vouchers as QIF.
02 / What carries over
From Tally XML to QIF, field by field.
What the Tally XML file can hold, and where it goes in the QIF file.
| In the Tally XML file | In the QIF file |
|---|---|
| Date | Kept |
| Amount (money in and out) | Kept |
| Payee or description | Kept |
| Memo (extra text) | Kept |
| Check or reference number | Kept |
| Category | QIF has no place for it |
| Credit card (not a bank account) | Not in a Tally XML file |
03 / Importing it
Importing the QIF file.
Quicken for Windows
- File, then File Import, then QIF File, and pick the account. Current versions take QIF into any account; versions from 2005 to 2017 only into cash, asset and liability accounts (use the .qfx file there).
Quicken for Mac
- File, then Import, then Bank or Brokerage File.
GnuCash, Microsoft Money, Banktivity, MoneyWiz
- File, then Import, then QIF.
04 / The Tally XML file
Getting a Tally XML file.
TallyPrime’s and Tally.ERP 9’s exchange format. Each voucher has ledger lines that balance: a debit is written as a negative amount.
- TallyPrime: open the Day Book (or the bank ledger’s vouchers), press Alt+E (Export), set Format to XML (Data Interchange), then Export.
Have a bank statement PDF instead? The bank statement converter reads it in your browser too.
05 / Good to know
The details that matter.
- Export from TallyPrime as XML (Data Interchange). You pick the ledger: bank ledgers come first. Cancelled and optional vouchers are left out, and Tally’s UTF-16 files are read as they are.
- Choose MM/DD/YYYY or DD/MM/YYYY to match your app’s region: QIF has no date standard. Credit cards are written as a card register.
06 / Questions
Straight answers.
Is this Tally XML to QIF converter free?
Yes, for 2 files a day with no account. A free account (just your email, no password) gives you 2 more, and paid plans have no daily limit. It runs in your browser, and nothing is stored.
Is my Tally XML file uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and the QIF file is written by code running in this browser tab. Neither is sent to a server. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab, and convert a file.
Which ledger becomes the account?
The bank ledger: ledgers with bank details come first, then any ledger on the bank or cash side of payments and receipts. You can pick another in the panel.
Does it work for credit cards?
Yes. You can also set the account type to Credit card in the panel, and the QIF file is written as a card statement.
07 / More converters
Other files, same idea.
All of them run in your browser. For PDFs, start at the bank statement converter; every converter is on the converters page.
